How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival, David Kaiser, 2011

I think the stories in this book are important to understanding the fields of context in which particular ideas grow and prosper.  The 60's and 70's were fertile years for those hanging out on the fringe.  Ideas were birthed. Many of them died or went underground in order to live.  The last ten years has matured these ideas and they are becoming part of the mainstream.  Other newer ideas are now on the fringe and ready to be put to good use.   The book offers good historical information about all the technology we are using today.
